NGC 7293, better known as the Helix Nebula, is one of the closest planetary nebulae to Earth, sitting about 650 light-years away in the constellation Aquarius.


Its familiar ring-like appearance can make it seem simple at first glance, but closer observations reveal a much more complicated structure. The nebula offers a remarkable view of what happens when a Sun-like star reaches the later stages of its life.


A Nebula With a Misleading Name


The Helix Nebula belongs to a class of objects called planetary nebulae. Despite the name, these objects have no connection to planets. The term came from their planet-like appearance when viewed through some early telescopes.


A planetary nebula forms when a star similar in size to the Sun reaches the later stages of its evolution and releases its outer layers into space. As a Sun-like star exhausts its usable nuclear fuel, its outer layers can be released into surrounding space, leaving behind a compact white dwarf.


The glowing material does not remain unchanged. As it moves outward, its temperature, density, and appearance evolve. Observing the Helix across different wavelengths allows astronomers to examine different parts of this process.


Ultraviolet observations have revealed radiation from the hot central remnant, while infrared observations provide information about the cooler gas and dust surrounding it. Looking at these different forms of light helps create a more complete understanding of the nebula's structure.

NGC 7293 is a reminder that familiar-looking objects in space can hide surprising complexity. What appears to be a simple glowing ring is actually an expanding collection of gas and dust shaped by the changing conditions around a stellar remnant.
